Maldives has called for stronger international action to urgently address the situation in Palestine at the 2025 Conference on the Question of Jerusalem.

The Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Ambassador of Maldives to Saudi Arabia Ahmed Sareer participated in the 2025 Conference on the Question of Jerusalem held in Dakar, Senegal on Wednesday.

The Conference, co-hosted by the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), was held under the theme: “Palestinian Oppression and Displacement in Jerusalem Amid War – A Reflection of the Broader Situation Across the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

During his remarks at the conference, Sareer expressed concern over the persisting hostilities and human suffering in East Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza.

He characterized the Israeli occupation as unlawful, fostering systematic and widespread displacement, dispossession, and dehumanization. Emphasizing the urgency of ending the violence and occupation, he called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, along with swift measures to address the humanitarian crisis. Ambassador Sareer also urged the international community to take strong and decisive action in support of a just and enduring peace.

The CEIRPP was created in 1975 by the UN General Assembly through resolution 3376, with the mandate to propose a plan of action enabling the Palestinian people to realize their inalienable rights—namely, the right to self-determination free from external influence, national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and properties from which they were displaced. The General Assembly approved the Committee’s recommendations, and the Committee continues to report to it on an annual basis. The Maldives has been an active member of the OIC since 1976.
