The Maldives has pledged USD 50,000 as an annual contribution to Palestine through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The pledge was announced in a statement delivered by the Maldives’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed during this year’s UNRWA Pledging Conference, held on Thursday at the United Nations Headquarters.
In his remarks, he stated that support for UNRWA is more than a budgetary decision, describing it instead as an investment in preserving human dignity and protecting the international rules-based order.

Ambassador Naseer also highlighted the challenges facing UNRWA’s operations, as well as what he described as false accusations directed at the agency. He called on the international community to provide sustained funding to ensure that UNRWA can fulfil its mandate effectively. He further reiterated the Maldives’ solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Historically, the Maldives has provided annual financial assistance to Palestine. While the previous contribution stood at USD 5,000, the government has increased the allocation tenfold to USD 50,000 beginning in 2024.
UNRWA was established by a United Nations General Assembly resolution in 1948 to provide relief and works programs for Palestinian refugees. The Maldives continues to be an active advocate for Palestinian rights across various international platforms.
