The whole country must strive to keep children away from all adverse influence and instill them with good virtues, says President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in a message on occasion of National Children’s Day.

In an address on Saturday, President Muizzu described Children’s Day as a celebration of aspirations for a happy future for the country.

He said that children – who make up for one-fourth of the Maldivian population - are preparing to lead the country in the future.

Bringing up a future capable generation that upholds the Maldives’ sovereignty, dignity and progress is the highest responsibility that rests upon the shoulders of each and every Maldivian citizen, he said.

In his address, President Muizzu stressed that all children are born pure and innocent, and that their behavior and faith are shaped by their upbringing.

“Children are pure and innocent by nature. They look to adults for parenting, guidance and support. Their innocence makes them follow the instructions of their elders. They emulate our behavior and live by our example,” he said.

He said that Children’s Day should be taken by everyone as a day to resolve to keep children away from all adverse influence, and ensure they are adorned with good virtues including respect for others in any given situation.

He said that everyone must ensure that children are equipped with the education and training they need for the future, and ensure that the country’s future lies in the hands of a generation that loves their country and will protect its values.

President Muizzu also had a special message for children. He urged children to understand that they are at the most precious stage in life and resolve to make each day an opportunity to learn something new and useful.

“Resolve to make each day more successful than the previous one. Perform the five Fard prayers, adhere to your religion and verse yourself in Maldivian culture and tradition. You’re your country the same way you love your mothers. Don’t waste time. Stick to a healthy lifestyle. Remain dutiful and obedient,” he said.

He described good upbringing of children as the surest guarantee for a prosperous future.

He ended his address by conveying Children’s Day greetings and well wishes to children across the country.

The Maldives celebrates its National Children’s Day on May 10 – commemorating the anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

A family festival is scheduled to take place in Hulhumale’ to celebrate the occasion.
