The Criminal Court has postponed the hearing in the bribery and money laundering case against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom concerning the lease of R. Fuggiri.
The sentencing hearing had been scheduled for Thursday, October 29, but Yameen’s lawyers were informed that the session would not proceed as planned. The court has not announced a new date.
Six individuals were initially charged in connection with accepting bribes and laundering money related to the lease of Fuggiri without a public bid. However, the prosecution has since withdrawn charges against the other defendants, leaving Yameen as the sole remaining accused in the case.
According to the prosecution, the Fuggiri deal, awarded to Dubai‑based Classic City Island Holdings for USD 1.55 million, was structured to raise funds for Yameen. Prosecutors allege that only a small portion of the payment was intended for the state, while the remainder was planned to be diverted to Yameen and his political party.
The postponement delays the conclusion of one of the most closely watched corruption cases linked to the MMPRC scandal.
