The government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese company on Monday to establish a 15-MW solar PV system and a 15-MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

Environment Ministry stated that the MoU was signed with Zhejiang Qingtian Solar Energy Technology Co., Ltd.

State Minister Hussain Aqeel Naseer signed the agreement on behalf of the Ministry, while Vice President Dong Ting He signed on behalf of Zhejiang Qingtian Solar Energy Technology.

Commenting on the signing, the Environment Ministry described the agreement as a significant step toward strengthening the Maldives’ renewable energy infrastructure and expanding the country’s energy generation and storage capacity. The Ministry noted that establishing the solar energy and battery storage system will further facilitate the adoption of renewable energy.

The Ministry described the initiative as a vital measure to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and reduce reliance on fuel for electricity generation.

Last month, Environment Minister Ali Shareef stated that the current administration had increased the country’s installed renewable energy capacity from 53 megawatts to 126 megawatts. The expanded capacity is expected to reduce annual diesel consumption by 3.1 million litres.

At the COP28 summit on December 1, 2023, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced a target of generating 33 percent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by the end of his five-year term. The President said achieving the target would require an investment of USD 600 million and called for support from the international community to help accomplish the goal.
