The young man arrested in connection with the accident that occurred on Sosun Magu on September 20 was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, police said.

The accident was reported at 01:13am. Three people were injured, including a woman and two men. Aishath Maahidha, 26, died five days later while receiving treatment.

Maah Hassan, 21, of Asseyri, Th. Dhiyamigili was arrested in connection with the case. He was initially remanded for 15 days, after which the court ordered him to remain in custody pending trial.

The Criminal Court issued an order on Thursday stating that evidence against him has been submitted. These include witness statements from the night of the accident, Maahidha’s death certificate, her medical records, CCTV snapshot reports, the incident report, traffic violation records and his criminal record.

26-year-old Aishath Maahidha who was injured in an accident on Sosun Magu last Saturday has passed away.

Maah told the court he had nothing to state regarding his arrest and acknowledged his prior arrest and detention history. Police informed the court that he did not hold a licence and was driving under the influence of a substance.

The court order stated that once the investigation is complete, the accused should be transferred to a remand jail.

Driving Under the Influence (DUI) has caused dangerous accidents in the past. On the 27th of last month, Home Minister Ali Ihusaan said there was an unusually high number of intoxicated driving cases, adding that Maldives Police are working with heightened attention on the issue.
