Power goes out in parts of Hulhumale’ Phase I

Power went out on Thursday in parts of Hulhumale’ Phase I.

State Electric Company (STELCO) confirmed the power outage just before 03:00 pm Thursday. The company attributed the outage to a “technical issue”, but did not elaborate.

“We are working on identifying the issue and resolving it. We apologize for the inconvenience,” added the company in an announcement via its social media handles.

The Maldivian capital, home to some 200,000 people, has been affected by frequent power outages in recent years. Many of the recent outages have been mostly attributed to damage to cables, with STELCO working quickly to fix the issues and restore power.

However, a total blackout in the capital on June 1, 2025 left tens of thousands of people who live there without power for nearly six hours.

STELCO has stated that it was working on boosting electricity supply to meet the growing demand in the populous capital, including building a 70-megawatt powerhouse in Hulhumale’.
