OPINION: A friend in faith and development: The Saudi-Maldives bond goes beyond diplomacy

Today, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia marks its National Day, a day that belongs to the Saudi people, to their pride, to their history and to the extraordinary journey of a nation that has grown into one of the most influential and respected in the world. From the Maldives, we celebrate alongside them. Not merely as a neighboring country in the broader Muslim world, but as a nation that has felt the warmth of Saudi friendship in ways that are real, lasting and deeply appreciated.

The bond between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia is not one that requires elaborate explanation. It is written in something far more fundamental, faith. Both nations are united by Islam, and that shared foundation creates a connection that goes beyond formal diplomacy. It is felt in the daily lives of ordinary Maldivians in the way we pray, in the values we hold, in the culture we have built across generations on these islands. The Quran is recited in our homes and schools, and Mecca remains the most sacred destination in the hearts of every Maldivian Muslim.

That is why the Hajj by Mecca Route initiative holds such special meaning for the Maldivians who have benefited from it. For many Maldivian pilgrims, completing the Hajj is the defining aspiration of a lifetime, a journey of faith, sacrifice and spiritual renewal. The Mecca Route initiative, which allows pilgrims to complete immigration and customs procedures in their home country before departure, removes one of the most daunting logistical challenges of the pilgrimage. It is a gesture of care a way of saying that the journey to the House of God should be eased, not burdened. For elderly pilgrims and first-time travellers alike, this initiative has been a gift of tremendous practical and emotional value.

Beyond faith, Saudi Arabia has extended its generous hand to the development of the Maldives in concrete and tangible ways. Saudi assistance in infrastructure projects has contributed to building a stronger foundation for our country, a support that reflects not just bilateral goodwill, but a genuine commitment to the progress of fellow Muslim nations.  The Saudi Fund for Development has been among the institutions that have stood alongside the Maldives as we have worked to grow our economy, connect our islands and build a better life for our people.

The relationship between our two countries is also one that Maldivians feel personally. Thousands of Maldivians travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah and Hajj every year. Many have studied in Saudi institutions, returned home with knowledge and built careers that serve this nation. These are human connections between people, not just governments and these are the threads that make a bilateral relationship truly enduring.

As Saudi Arabia celebrates its National Day, the Maldives stands in appreciation and admiration. The Kingdom has been a friend in faith, a partner in development and a source of inspiration for a Muslim nation that looks to the land of the two holy mosques with reverence and gratitude.
