Shamheed to contest in MDP’s primary citing need for new solutions that have not failed

Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s South Hulhumale’ MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed has formally announced his decision to contest the party’s presidential primary.

Speaking with Sun, Shamheed said that many of those who have declared their intention to contest the upcoming presidential election were involved in policies that had failed throughout the Maldives’ 18-year democratic journey. He said his decision to enter the presidential race was driven by a desire to present new ideas and innovative solutions to the challenges currently facing the country.

"I do not believe those individuals possess new ideas or visions for the nation. Their interest in the presidency seems focused on serving a specific group of people," said Shamheed, who has previously served as the Transport Ministry.

Several senior figures within the MDP have already announced their candidacies for the party’s presidential primary. They include former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, and former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail. Fayyaz is contesting the primary with the backing of former President Mohamed Nasheed, and all three candidates have already begun their respective campaigns.

Former Vice President Faisal Naseem has also indicated his intention to seek the MDP’s presidential ticket.

MDP’s Chairperson Nasheed recently told Sun that he expects the party to hold its presidential primary early next year.
