Gulhi fishing vessel discovers item believed to be ambergris

The crew of the fishing vessel 'Halifa', from K. Gulhi, has discovered an object believed to be ambergris.

Speaking to Sun on condition of anonymity, a member of the crew said the object was discovered two days ago while the vessel was at sea on a fishing excursion.

The individual said the object weighs approximately 10 kilograms and is believed to be white ambergris. Tests are currently underway to determine whether it is genuine.

According to the source, the 'Halifa' crew found the suspected ambergris approximately 30 miles off the coast of AA. Thoddoo. He added that the crew plans to sell the object once its authenticity has been confirmed.

If verified as genuine ambergris, the find is expected to command a substantial price due to its weight. Maldivians have made similar discoveries on previous occasions.

Ambergris is occasionally found floating at sea or washed ashore in different parts of the Maldives. Of its various types, white ambergris is regarded as one of the most valuable and expensive varieties.
