Situation in Feydhoo ‘gradually improving’ after floods leave 95 homes damaged

Addu City Council says that the situation in the Feydhoo district has begun to gradually improve after torrential rain flooded the island and damaged at least 95 homes.

Feydhoo was the island that suffered the heaviest damage in the heavy rain that fell over the Maldives over last weekend.

A spokesperson from Addu City Council told Sun that 95 homes in Feydhoo sustained flood-damage in the heavy rain that fell over the island on Saturday and Sunday. Seven of the homes sustained severe damage, resulting in the families living there having to move to temporary shelters.

The Addu City Council states it is working with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to assess the full extent of the damage.

Feydhoo councilwoman Zaha Ali told Sun on Monday morning that the weather had now improved, but that the condition of the flood-affected homes remained dire.

“We have recorded flood-damage to 95 homes. We believe the actual figure could be higher, as some flood-affected homes haven’t reported it. The extent of the damage to flood-hit homes will become clear once the assessment is done. I believe it will be done by tonight,” she said.

Zaha added the need to redevelop Feydhoo’s storm water drain system in order for a permanent solution to flooding.

The heavy rain that fell over the Maldives over the last weekend causing flooding in multiple islands, including the capital Male’. However, the worst of the damage was reported from southern islands, including Addu City and Fuvahmulah City.
