Sheena becomes first Maldivian woman to be licensed as a tour guide

A Maldivian woman has made history by becoming the first woman to work as a licensed tour guide in the tourism sector.

This milestone was achieved by Aishath Sheena, Kammatheege/S. Feydhoo.

A special meeting was held at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation on Thursday to welcome Sheena. During the meeting, Tourism Minister Mohamed Ameen met Sheena, congratulated her on behalf of the government, and formally handed over the official tour guide pass.

Tour guides play an important role in conducting tours for visitors to Male' and other inhabited islands, providing historical and cultural information about the Maldives and the islands they visit. They also assist tourists with general information and services during their stay.

The government has been working to expand economic and professional opportunities for women, and the ministry said it welcomes the advancement of women in such fields. The government will continue efforts to create more pathways for women to participate in the tourism sector.

Being a tour guide requires proficiency in multiple languages, a strong understanding of Maldivian history and island culture, and a naturally welcoming disposition.
