Dhiraagu partners with SEAD to advance ocean literacy among Maldivian youth

Dhiraagu has partnered with local non-profit SEAD to support ocean literacy among young people, helping them develop a deeper understanding of our oceans and the knowledge and skills to help protect the marine environment.

SEAD is a non-governmental organization guided by the principles of Science, Explore, Act and Discover, combining environmental education with practical experiences including citizen science and marine data collection, field expeditions, ecosystem restoration and hands-on water-based activities.

Through the partnership, Dhiraagu will provide connectivity support to SEAD’s Urban Hub in Hulhumale’ and outreach activities in the islands, while both organizations will work together to raise environmental awareness and bring attention to the importance of ocean literacy.

According to Dhiraagu, these joint efforts aim to encourage a greater understanding of the Maldivian marine environment among young people and the role individuals and communities can play in protecting it.

The SEAD program engages young people through learning sessions and hands-on, water-based experiences in Hulhumale’, K. Kaashidhoo and B. Goidhoo. Delivered with the involvement of local experts and marine biologists, participants explore areas including marine ecosystems, seagrass and wetlands, freshwater ecosystems, sustainable practices and ecosystem restoration, alongside activities such as snorkeling, surfing and kitesurfing that encourage firsthand engagement with the marine environment.

Dhiraagu stressed that for an island nation such as the Maldives, building ocean literacy is particularly important.

“Our oceans are deeply connected to our way of life, our communities and our future. Creating opportunities for young people to learn about and experience the marine environment first-hand can help build a stronger connection with it, while wider awareness can encourage more people to understand the importance of protecting it,” reads a statement released by the company, announcing the partnership.

According to Dhiraagu, the partnership forms part of the company’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and youth development, complementing its ongoing initiatives in marine conservation, environmental awareness and community engagement.

Dhiraagu states that it remains committed to supporting meaningful initiatives that protect the natural environment, empower young people and contribute to stronger communities nationwide.
