Gapo assures public that no MDP MP will accept money linked to corruption

Opposition MDP MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo) on Thursday said that no member of the Maldivian Democratic Party will accept or engage with money earned through corruption.

Speaking at a press conference held by the MDP parliamentary group, Gapo, who previously served as the party’s interim chairman, said none of the party’s 13 MPs would ever get involved in “the people’s money” or be accused of corruption.

“We know how to distinguish between haram and halal. We will not take haram money home, and we will not give haram money to our wives and children,” Gapo said.

He said corruption continues to take place in a country like the Maldives, and the MDP will keep speaking out against it. Gapo added that such cases must be stopped and urged the public to raise their voices against corruption.

“We are with the people, and we will not neglect the people. We will not get involved in the people’s money. I assure the people of Maldives that none of our members will ever touch illegal money earned through corruption,” said the Hanimaadhoo MP.

Gapo expressed concern that the country could be “lost to the people” if crimes such as corruption are not stopped.

The MDP currently holds 13 seats in parliament. The party had a supermajority in the previous administration, while the ruling PNC now holds a supermajority with 74 seats.

It is worth noting that every government in the Maldives has faced allegations of corruption.
