Drug haul reaches MVR 120 million as police conduct over 1,100 operations this year

Police has revealed that it seized more than MVR 120 million worth of drugs and liquor in operations conducted during the first seven months of this year.

According to police statistics, 137.03 kg of drugs seized in various operations carried a street value of MVR 120.24 million. In addition, the 845 bottles and cans of liquor confiscated were valued at MVR 960,900.

In total, 144.34 kg of drugs and 1,856 bottles and cans of liquor have been seized so far this year, bringing the combined value of confiscated items to MVR 121.20 million.

Police said an average of five operations were conducted per day, amounting to 1,141 operations between January and July. Of these, 531 drug‑related operations were carried out in Male' City, while 329 were conducted in the northern region.

During the same period, officers searched 23,249 individuals and arrested 7,309 suspects.

Drugs remain one of the most persistent and serious challenges facing the Maldives.
