A man from Addu City has received the life sentence for trafficking diamorphine or heroin.
According to police, Abdul Wahhab Ahmed, 59, Dhafthar no 07, S. Meedhoo, was tried for trafficking under Article 105 of the Drugs Act.
On Sunday, the court found him guilty of the charge, and sentenced him to a life term of 25 years in prison and imposed a fine of MVR 100,000.
The case in question was reported to the police on December 1, 2021. The police finished the investigation and forwarded it to the Prosecutor General’s Office for charges on January 13, 2022.
In a statement on Monday, the police described the conviction as the result of joint efforts by the police and other relevant authorities to combat drugs.
The police said they were engaged in focused efforts to have drug traffickers punished to the full extent of the law.
