Trio arrested for allegedly smuggling over a kilo of drugs into Maldives

Maldivian authorities have arrested three people, including a Jamaican national, on suspicion of smuggling over a kilo of drugs into the country.

In a statement on Thursday, the police identified the trio arrested in the case as Andrew Lloyd Corbin, 53, Jamaica; Ibrahim Athoof, 20, Norightge, N. Lhohi; and a third suspect identified only as a Maldivian national.

According to police, Corbin was arrested on Sunday after Customs informed the agency that he had drugs concealed in his body when he arrived in the Maldives on a plane.

Athoof and the third suspect was arrested from Hulhumale’ the next day, in a joint operation by Drug Enforcement and Counter-Narcotics Intelligence. They are suspected of conspiring with Corbin to smuggle and sell drugs in the Maldives.

Both Corbin and Athoof were remanded in custody of the police for 15 days, while the third suspect was granted conditional release.

During his remand hearing on Tuesday, police told the Criminal Court that Athoof threw the bag suspected of containing drugs and attempted to destroy the link between himself and the evidence during his arrest.

The case is under further investigation by the police.
