Mayor Azim: Council has staff that neglect their duties which hinders operations

Malé City Mayor Adam Azim, citing that some employees of the Malé City Council are neglecting their duties, states that a formal request has been submitted to the Civil Service Commission (CSC) seeking the removal of such staff members from their positions.

Speaking on SSTV’s ‘Baaru Hathareh’ program, Mayor Azim said the existence of employees who fail to carry out their responsibilities and display negligence has become a major obstacle to the effective functioning of the Council.

He stated that the Council receives little to no productive contribution from certain employees, making it increasingly difficult to improve and strengthen the institution’s operations.

"The existence of staff who lack discipline, shirk their responsibilities, and are negligent hinders the progress of the institution," Azim remarked.

He added that although the Council is experiencing a shortage of committed employees, addressing the issue would not be possible without removing those who refuse to perform their duties.

Addressing staff attendance, Azim said some employees do not report to work consistently, often attending one day and becoming absent the next. He noted that the attendance records of some staff members indicate they are absent for as much as 30 percent of the month.

He also stressed the need to eliminate unethical practices, including employees clocking in at the start of the day and then spending working hours outside on tea and coffee breaks.

Mayor Azim further alleged that there are systemic issues within the Civil Service Commission, claiming that the Commission has not cooperated with the Council’s efforts to deliver services to the public. He said employees who fail to carry out their responsibilities should either be transferred to other institutions or recalled by the Commission.

Concluding his remarks, Azim said the Civil Service Commission must ensure the Council is staffed with qualified, educated, and disciplined professionals rather than negligent employees. He reiterated that delivering satisfactory public services is not possible while such uncommitted staff remains within the institution.
