President congratulates new UK PM Burnham, expressed 'eagerness to work closely'

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended congratulations to Andrew Burnham, who has assumed office as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

In an official letter, President Muizzu conveyed warm wishes on behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives, expressing hope for Burnham’s success in his new role. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ appreciation for the long-standing ties between the two countries, noting that the relationship is built on shared democratic values, human rights, and strong people-to-people connections.

The President also highlighted the United Kingdom’s contributions to the Maldives’ socio-economic development over the years, and said he looks forward to working closely with Prime Minister Burnham to further strengthen cooperation. He expressed interest in meeting Burnham in the near future to explore new avenues of partnership.

Burnham, 56, is the former Mayor of Greater Manchester and leader of the Labour Party. He formally became the UK's Prime Minister following Keir Starmer's resignation. The political handover occurred on July 20, 2026, after Burnham won a special parliamentary by-election in June and subsequently succeeded Starmer as leader of the Labour Party.

President Muizzu concluded his message by extending his personal best wishes to Burnham for good health and wellbeing, and for continued peace and progress for the people of the United Kingdom.
