The government has received dollars so far only because of agreements made during the previous MDP administration, former Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer said Sunday night.
Speaking at the MDP’s panel discussion on the dollar shortage, Ameer said the current government has not brought in any foreign currency for more than two years.
He alleged that the dollars circulating inside the country were spent on government “waste” and unnecessary projects.
“In 2025 and 2026, the government did not bring a single dollar included in the budget. So far, every dollar we have received in these two and a half years has come from various agreements we signed in the previous five years,” Ameer said.

Ameer also claimed the government is preparing to print money using the pension fund. He said candidates for the board are now being asked whether they agree to print money.
He said this is one of the reasons the dollar is under severe pressure.
Ameer noted that the government came to power promising to solve the dollar problem. However, despite repeatedly announcing dates to resolve the issue, the dollar has not depreciated.
The situation has escalated to the point where the price of a dollar has remained above MVR 20 for several days.
