An 18-year-old man arrested in a criminal case has been jailed pending the outcome of trial for fleeing police custody.

The teenager, a native of Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, was taken to the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Saturday, following his rearrest.

At the hearing, the police presented evidence including witness statements and CCTV footage against the suspect.

The investigation officer told the court that the suspect had fled custody after he was arrested under a court warrant, despite repeated warnings that he was not allowed to leave the police station.

Criminal Court’s chief judge Adam Mohamed stressed that obstruction of police was a serious matter, and there were sufficient grounds to establish he deliberately obstructed officers and the enforcement of law.

The judge also decided there were sufficient evidence to suggest the 18-year-old also conspired with others at the police station before fleeing.

The judge ordered for the teen to be held in a custodial jail pending the outcome of his trial.
