The government has provided financial assistance to 10 island councils to establish plant nurseries under the five million tree planting programme.

The five‑million‑tree initiative is a key pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, a commitment to plant five million trees within five years. The project was officially inaugurated on Environment Day 2024.

According to the Environment Ministry, more than 5.8 million tree pledges have been received to date, and over 1.6 million trees have already been planted nationwide. The ministry aims to plant an additional one million trees this year.

The ministry said the project focuses on sustainable tree‑planting and the development of supporting infrastructure. The grant agreements were signed on Tuesday to enable councils across the country to establish nurseries as part of the programme.
