Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed says the PNC’s presidential candidate for 2028 is none other than the party’s president and incumbent head of state, Dr Mohamed Muizzu, regardless of what the opposition claims.
Saeed made the remark in a post on X on Monday, responding to criticism from opposition leaders. He said the PNC’s members, leadership, parliamentary group, and every layer of the party share the same position: President Muizzu remains the party’s candidate for the next presidential election.
According to Saeed, President Muizzu’s administration has delivered on the promises made to the Maldivian people, and he pledged to continue supporting the president in his efforts to bring “peace, development, and progress” to the country. He added that he would work to ensure success in every task entrusted to him in pursuit of those goals.
Saeed stressed that the outcome of the party’s internal elections has not altered the PNC’s presidential ticket. Instead, he said, the party has grown stronger under President Muizzu’s leadership.

He highlighted that the PNC has become the largest political party in the Maldives, secured the highest number of electoral victories in a short period, and won the biggest supermajority in parliamentary history. He also credited the government with paying down the most debt, reclaiming the most land, and implementing the highest number of development projects within just two years and six months.
Saeed argued that the Maldives’ biggest political challenge today is the absence of a capable opposition, saying no credible alternative is visible within the current coalition of opposition leaders.
“What we are seeing is everything backfiring, the opposition is driven by hatred and greed,” he said.
