The windows of a mosque in Male’ City were shattered on Sunday night, in an incident slammed by Mayor Adam Azim as a “cowardly” act of vandalism.
In a statement on Monday morning, the Male’ City Council, which manages mosques in the capital, said that the windows of Masjid al-Furqan were damaged and shattered in the incident which took place overnight.
The case has been reported to the police.
Mayor Azim has condemned what he described as a “cowardly act”, and urged authorities to find and punish the culprits.
“The mayor called for individuals who render such damage to mosques, places that Islam calls to be held in such high regard, to be identified and delivered their due punishment,” said the city council in its statement.
Azim stressed that mosques are holy places that all citizens must respect and protect.
Such incidents are completely unacceptable, he added.
Vandal attacks are not new to Masjid al-Furqan.
Back in November 2024, authorities arrested a man after copies of the Holy Quran were found thrown to the ground, and electrical adapters and water taps at the mosque were damaged in a shocking act of vandalism.
Similar incidents of vandalism have also been reported at additional mosques in Male’ in the past.
