A legislative amendment submitted by a lawmaker from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to classify vandalism of mosques as an act of terrorism has been accepted into the Parliament for consideration with the backing of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).

The amendment to the Counter-Terrorism Act, proposed by North Golhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), was accepted into the Parliament on Wednesday with a unanimous vote of 56.

Presenting his bill, Kudu expressed concern over repeated acts of vandalism of mosques, something that he warned damages the prestige of mosques – which all Muslims have a duty to protect.

During debate time, both PNC and MDP lawmakers spoke it favor of the bill, over all.
