Suspect in Hulhumale’ shop assault arrested after he returns wielding a knife

A man who threatened and assaulted the staff at a shop in Hulhumale’ Phase II was arrested on Saturday, after he returned to the same shop wielding a knife.

The incident reportedly took place at a shop located at MPL Tower B, in Hulhumale’ Phase II.

Both incidents were caught of CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the building.

The time stamp on the CCTV footage shows the first incident took place around 04:30 am, when a long-haired man wearing a black shirt and blue jeans turned around the monitor at the cash counter, and threaten two female cashiers and two male shop workers.

He was also caught on camera slapping one of the male workers, and pushing down the monitor of the counter, before leaving the shop, only to immediately re-entering the shop and straightening the monitor.

A second video clip circulating on social media shows the same man returning to the shop wearing a different shirt and wielding a knife.

He was stopped by a group of civilians, who attacked him before handing him over to the police.

The police confirm that the two incidents involved the same perpetrator, who has been placed under arrest.

He was identified simply as a Maldivian male.

The police said they were investigating the assault with a sharp-edged weapon as a serious crime.
