F. Feeali Island Council has asked Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam to expedite the rebuilding of the island’s ice plant, which was destroyed in the fire that broke out in Feeali last April.

On April 9, a fire erupted on a fuel boat docked at the Feeali harbor and spread to three nearby vessels. The flames also reached the island’s ice plant, located about 15 feet from the boat.

The Fisheries Ministry said on Wednesday that Minister Shiyam met with the Feeali Council, the Women’s Development Committee, and the constituency’s MP Ahmed Aslam.

During the meeting, the council requested the government to find an immediate solution to the damage caused to the ice plant and to fast‑track reconstruction works, the ministry said.

They also discussed the development of a sport fishing pond on the island and briefed the Minister on opportunities in the fisheries and agriculture sectors.

The Feeali ice plant was brought into operation in June last year. Fenaka handed over the site to MIFCO on September 1, 2025, according to MIFCO.

A foreign worker who suffered severe burns in the Feeali fire was transferred to IGMH for further treatment, but he died on the 7th of last month.

Feeali Council has previously met with police and raised concerns about the damage caused to vehicles and infrastructure on the island. The council also stressed the need to complete the investigation quickly to determine the cause of the incident.
