Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s deputy chairperson Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey) stated on Sunday that the party has no plans to introduce further changes to its leadership following the election of a chairperson.

Former president Mohamed Nasheed was elected MDP’s chairperson by a landslide difference in a highly contested election held on Friday.

Nasheed won the election despite the fact that a number of senior MDP figures had publicly endorsed and campaigned for his rival, South Galolhu Meekail Ahmed Naseem, including former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

In the aftermath of the election, widespread speculation emerged regarding the possibility of a major reshuffle within the party leadership due to the intense internal competition that characterized the race.

Commenting on the matter, Iburey told Sun that the position of chairperson is the highest administrative office within the party and that the election of a new chairperson itself represents a significant leadership change.

"A new individual has now been appointed to the post of MDP chairperson. Beyond this, we do not have any intentions of making further changes to the party’s leadership," he affirmed.

According to provisional election results, Nasheed won the election with 20,943 votes, account fort 69 percent of the total votes.

The election was widely regarded as one of the most competitive and energetic internal contests in the history of Maldivian political parties. However, the campaign was also marked by allegations from both factions involving corruption, abuse of power, and questionable political arrangements.

Members of the party who were listed on the party’s membership registry as of April 22 are eligible to vote in the election.
