Each family or household needs a monthly income of at least MVR 60,000, says former President Mohamed Nasheed, adding that the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will be the party to make it possible.
Nasheed, who is contesting the MDP chairpersonship election, made the remarks during a campaign visit on Tuesday to N. Kudafari.
During his visit, Nasheed said that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration was paying off the country’s debt by taking on more debt and cutting subsidies.
He also accused the administration of deliberately denying Aasandha and blocking procurement of medicine in order to save money to repay debt.
Nasheed said that MDP envisioned repaying the country’s debt by enriching its people.
He said that families need double the income they currently earn.
“There needs to be at least 60,000 going into each home. Each family needs this amount. In Sha Allah, the MDP will get this done,” he said.
Nasheed said that if the MDP were to come back to power, it will change policies so that families are able to generate a higher income. He said that the party will also formulate special policies for the benefit of people who run home-based businesses such as baking.
Nasheed, during his administration, introduced the public health insurance scheme Aasandha as well as welfare benefits such as old age allowance, and a monthly allowance for persons with disabilities.
