Opposition MDP Chairman and former President Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday reminded party lawmakers to keep their remarks aligned with official party policy, following a resolution submitted in Parliament calling for disclosure of the government’s agreement with UAE-based Eagle Hills for the Rasmale’ project.

The resolution, submitted by MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, states that the government has yet to reveal the commercial terms agreement signed with Eagle Hills. It calls for disclosure under Article 29 of the Constitution and Article 70(b)(3), citing concerns that the agreement keeps all details confidential, does not reimburse reclamation costs funded by taxpayers, grants over 500 hectares for 99 years without acquisition cost or rent, allows rolling lease interest, and leaves manufacturing rights with Eagle Hills. Meekail warned that concealing such a major contract could cause serious financial damage and lead to corruption.

Nasheed then issued an indirect caution to MDP MPs, recalling the expulsion of former MP Ali Azim for violating party policy. Writing in the MDP National Assembly WhatsApp group, Nasheed said Azim was removed for speaking against the party’s position while serving as an MP, and reminded members that MDP has already issued an official statement regarding Eagle Hills.

His message is widely interpreted as a warning for MPs not to contradict the party’s stance when speaking in Parliament or public forums. Azim was expelled on May 15, 2023, after working with opposition parties against the ITLOS ruling on the Maldives - Mauritius maritime dispute.

Following Nasheed’s caution, several MDP MPs said no member has spoken against the party’s decision on the Eagle Hills issue in Parliament.
