The largest “Sea Turtle Health Institute” in the Asian region, dedicated to the treatment of diseases and injuries affecting sea turtles, has been officially inaugurated at Jawakara Islands Maldives.

The state-of-the-art facility was inaugurated by Sarah Moosa, Managing Director of Crown & Champa Resorts.

The institute marks a major milestone in advancing comprehensive medical treatment and rehabilitation services for injured sea turtles.

The institute focuses on the treatment of limb injuries, buoyancy disorders, and nutritional complications affecting sea turtles. Equipped with world-class clinical expertise, the facility delivers specialized care within an environment designed to support optimal recovery, while also functioning as a center for advanced marine research.

It currently features seven specialized tanks, comprising four hospital tanks, one large therapeutic tank, and two critical care units.

A marine research center was established at Jawakara in September last year. The center serves as a platform for academic research undertaken by both local and international universities, while also providing students pursuing careers in marine science with essential training opportunities and research resources.

Crown & Champa Resorts, a company where Mohamed Moosa (Uchu) holds shares, currently operates 11 resorts across the Maldives and has maintained a longstanding commitment to environmental sustainability and conservation initiatives.
