22‑year‑old trapped underwater when fishing gear lodged in rocks dies

A 22‑year‑old man died on Tuesday while attempting to catch fish off L. Hithadhoo.

The youth is Ahmed Hamzaan, Amaan/L.Hithadhoo.

Island councillor Abdul Wahid Idhrees told Sun that the young man had been fishing using a spear-like-rod when the rod he was using became lodged between rocks, trapping him underwater.

Police said they received a report at 3:42 p.m. of a young man drowning while fishing near the island. He was taken to the Hithadhoo Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead.
