The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has pulled Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim from the key parliamentary committees he sat in.
His exit from the committees came to light on Tuesday. However, no official announcement regarding the changes was made during Tuesday’s sitting, which he had presided over.
The Parliament’s official website shows Nazim has been removed from both the Public Accounts Committee and the Security Services Committee (241 Committee) – the most powerful committees of the legislative assembly. Nazim has been replaced in the Public Accounts Committee by Central Machangolhi MP Ahmed Zameer, and in the Security Services Committee by North Fuvahmulah MP Hamad Abdulla.
But he does not appear to have been removed from the State-Owned Enterprises Committee, according to the website.
Nazim was not immediately available for comment regarding why he was pulled from the committees.
It is also unclear why the changes weren’t announced during Tuesday’s sitting.
Ibrahim Falah, the leader of PNC’s parliamentary group, was not immediately available for comment either.
Nazim, the representative for Dhiggaru constituency, had been highly active in the two committees from which he was pulled, leading key inquiries, including the one into the corruption allegations against the Police Cooperative Society (POLCO).
Changes to committee compositions by parties are often because of political reasons.
One such change was when Central Hithadhoo MP Ahmed Azaan Marzooq was pulled from the Public Accounts Committee and the Security Services Committee in March 2025 after major differences in opinion with the government saw him violate three-line whips issued by the PNC’s parliamentary group. He was appointed back to the committees five months later, in August 2025.
