A man convicted of sexually assaulting his 16-year-old stepdaughter while under quarantine during the Covid-19 pandemic has appealed his sentence with the Supreme Court.
The man in question was sentenced to 15 years in prison after he was found guilty of repeatedly assaulting the young girl in December 2020. The sentence was upheld upon appeal by the High Court.
The man, who maintained his innocence throughout the trial, has now filed an appeal with the Supreme Court.
The man had reportedly made an attempt to molest the young girl even before he married her mother. The girl shared this with her mother, only to be told that he was not “that sort of person”.
The state presented evidence proving the man repeatedly sexually abused the girl as she slept, as well as when he would take her to school, or by taking her to different locations during nighttime.
After her mother failed to believe her, the young girl shared it with her friends and their families.
It was then that the sexual abuse came to light.
The man was subsequently arrested, and remained in jail when he was convicted.
