Qatar Airways has resumed operations to the Maldives on Thursday following a brief suspension in light of the Middle East conflict.
Mohamed Firaq, Chief Executive Officer of Ace Travels—the General Sales Agent (GSA) for Qatar Airways in the Maldives—stated that the resumption of flights represents a positive indicator for both the tourism sector and the broader Maldivian economy.
This development is regarded as a significant step toward restoring air connectivity between the Maldives and global destinations. Although the temporary suspension led to a short-term decline in tourist arrivals, market conditions are anticipated to improve progressively with the airline’s return.
The resumption of Qatar Airways services has also delivered immediate benefits to the logistics sector by enabling more efficient import and export operations. According to Firaq, the inaugural flight alone carried 11 tonnes of goods in demand in the Maldivian market. Additionally, the flight transported 4,000 kilograms of export goods, primarily consisting of items delivered by sea and subsequently exported via air, thereby providing substantial support to the country’s export industry.
Beyond passenger transport, these operations play a critical role in supporting various domestic industries. Firaq explained that the flights will accelerate the import of perishable goods, ensuring a reliable supply of fresh produce for the nation’s resorts.
The expansion of cargo capacity represents a key driver of economic growth. Moreover, other Middle Eastern carriers are also increasing their presence in the Maldives. FlyDubai currently operates three weekly flights from Dubai to Male’. On Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, these services also connect Male’ with Colombo, thereby strengthening regional connectivity within South Asia and offering greater convenience for travelers between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
FlyDubai is progressively increasing its flight frequency to Male’ and working to expand its network to additional international destinations through its Dubai hub. This growth enhances travel flexibility and supports the continued expansion of the Maldivian tourism market by providing more route options for visitors from Europe and the Middle East.
The challenges previously faced by the Maldivian tourism and aviation sectors as a result of regional tensions in the Middle East appear to be subsiding, contributing to a more optimistic outlook. The continued commitment of major carriers such as Qatar Airways and Flydubai underscores sustained confidence in the Maldives as a global destination. Difficulties experienced by travellers due to earlier flight cancellations are now being mitigated through the resumption and expansion of services.
To further support passengers, Qatar Airways has introduced flexible ticketing policies, allowing customers to rebook or modify their travel plans through June 15 of this year.
With these strategic developments, the transport network is expected to strengthen further, likely contributing to an increase in tourist arrivals. Qatar Airways has implemented a revised flight schedule effective through the April 15th, after which the airline will assess the potential for further expansion of its operations.
