President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said on Saturday night that the government accepts the outcomes of the Local Council elections, the Women’s Development Committee elections, and the referendum on merging the Maldives’ two main elections, adding that the administration will work on making necessary improvements.

In a post on X, the President acknowledged the results, expressed respect for the outcome, and congratulated the winning candidates.

"I assure all beloved Maldivian citizens that, the government, with Almighty Allah’s blessings, will undertake efforts to rectify necessary matters as desired by the people," he wrote.

Maldivians voted on Saturday in the local council elections, the women’s development committee (WDC) elections, as well as a referendum on merging the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Voting began at 8:00am, and polling stations stopped admitting voters to the queue at 17:00pm. Counting of ballots is now in progress.

Preliminary results received by Sun show that 70.1 percent of the votes counted so far were against merging the elections, while 29.9 percent supported the change.

Meanwhile, main opposition MDP has swept the mayoral race in five Maldivian cities – Male’, Addu, Fuvahmulah, Thinadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi – as incumbent mayors representing the main opposition party defend their seats.

While 294,876 people were eligible to vote in the three elections held on Saturday, a total of 185,709 individuals cast their votes at the closure of polling hours. This accounts for 63 percent of the eligible voters.
