Male' City Mayor Adam Azim says the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has remained unchanged in name and ideology since its formation, even as new political groups emerge ahead of every election cycle.

Speaking at an MDP rally held in the Lonuziyaarai area on Thursday evening, Azim said the party’s foundations have stayed firm despite shifting political landscapes. His remarks were widely seen as an attempt to reinforce confidence among members and supporters ahead of the upcoming elections.

Azim said that while new political movements continue to appear under different names, the safest choice for the public is to stand with experienced parties that have a proven track record.

He told supporters that various “anonymous” actors enter the political arena during election periods, forming new parties and making grand promises. However, he said these promises often fail to materialise once the elections are over.

In contrast, Azim said the MDP has maintained the same name, identity and core principles since its inception, a consistency he described as the party’s greatest strength in earning public trust.

He said the MDP’s name is a clear and established identity in Maldivian political history, unlike newer groups that may confuse voters. Azim also questioned the credibility of promises made by newly formed parties, expressing concern over their lack of practical results.

Calling on supporters to rally behind the MDP, he urged voters to choose the party’s symbol, the scales of justice, to ensure the continuation of its policies for the benefit of the country and its people.

Azim concluded by repeatedly urging the public to vote for the MDP in the upcoming elections, saying the country needs sustainable policies and the leadership of an experienced party to build a stable future.
