Male' City Council states priority will be given to first-time couples with limited financial means when providing free venues for wedding receptions in the capital.
The decision to introduce this service was finalized during the Council meeting held on Wednesday.
The Council intends to establish specific criteria and guidelines for eligibility, which will be publicly announced alongside an invitation for applications as soon as possible.
This initiative fulfills a key campaign pledge made to the youth by Mayor Adam Azim and several city councilors.
Speaking with Sun on Thursday, Mayor Adam Azim emphasized that the primary focus of providing these venues is to assist those who face significant challenges in securing a wedding venue due to financial constraints.
"There are many individuals currently unable to proceed with their marriage because they lack the financial capacity to host a reception. Therefore, our priority must be to support those in such situations," the Mayor stated.
While the Council has decided to provide halls or public spaces free of charge for first-time marriages, this move is expected to impact the institution's revenue. Currently, the City Council generates substantial income by leasing out spaces for such events.
Notably, Lonuziyaaraiy Park, one of the most sought-after locations for wedding receptions in Male', is managed by the Council and currently commands a significant rental fee.
The Mayor further noted that the exact launch date and the specific venues to be included in this scheme will be determined following a committee review. The matter has been referred to the relevant committee, which is currently deliberating on booking and cancellation policies, security arrangements, and deposit requirements.
With hundreds of marriages taking place in Male' every month, many couples face immense pressure due to the high costs associated with hosting celebrations. This initiative by the Male' City Council is expected to offer significant financial relief to young families embarking on their new lives together.
