Schools across the Maldives closed for the rest of Ramadan on Thursday after remaining open for the first week of the holy month.
According to the academic calendar, schools will reopen after Eid on March 23.
The coming week is listed as a “professional development week”, meaning that students will not have any classes. Schools will officially close from March 9-18 for the last 10 days of Ramadan, and will remain closed for the three-day Eid al-Fitr holiday, which is expected to begin on March 20.
Students will not need to return to school until March 23, giving them a long 24-day holiday.
The academic year began on January 27, and the long school break comes after just a month of classes.
