A man from G.Dh. Vaadhoo has been sentenced to prison for destroying his mother’s phone and television inside a Hiyaa Phase II flat in Hulhumale'.

The incident took place last October, when the man got into an argument with his mother and proceeded to break her Samsung phone and the TV in the living room. He was charged with damage to property.

The defendant pleaded guilty to destroying the phone, valued at MVR 5,200, and the TV, valued at MVR 5,799. As a result, the case was processed as an expedited trial.

While the basic sentence for the offence is four months and 24 days in prison, the court reduced the sentence to three months and two days after considering his guilty plea and request for leniency.

The court also ordered that the 16 days he spent in custody during the investigation be deducted from the sentence.

Criminal Court Chief Justice Adam Mohamed delivered the verdict last week. The case was filed by the prosecution in November last year.
