The State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced a scheduled power interruption in parts of Hulhumale’ on Sunday morning to facilitate upgrades to the distribution network.

According to a public notice, electricity will be cut off in areas around Hirundhu Magu and Ahigas Magu between 10:00 and 10:30 hours on December 28. The company said the 30‑minute outage is necessary to improve its power infrastructure.

STELCO apologized for any inconvenience caused and urged residents to take precautions.

The announcement follows recent technical issues in Hulhumale’, including a prolonged outage last Wednesday that left parts of the first phase without power for over two hours.

A separate incident on November 26 also affected the same area.

In a tragic development earlier this year, a STELCO employee died from injuries sustained during a fire while resolving a power issue.

Hulhumale’ has experienced several major outages in the past. On June 1, 2013, the entire city and Hulhumale’ lost power for nearly six hours. Another blackout occurred on August 9, with service restored after two and a half hours.

STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahumy said the company is aware of the challenges and is working to improve service reliability.

Sudden outages can damage electrical appliances and disrupt daily life, so it is advisable to prepare for power outages when the utility companies issue such warnings.
