Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon states that the current administration brought an end to 15 years of neglecting Maldives’ defense sector.

Speaking at the official reception on Monday morning to mark this year’s Victory Day, Minister Ghassan noted that since 1988, Maldivians have united every November 3rd in gratitude to honor the victory over a terrorist attack.

“The sacrifice of the martyrs who gave up their lives to defend the nation without hesitation, and the sincere resolve showcased by our beloved Maldivian citizens of various statures,” he added.

“Today, the highest praise and gratitude go to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his tireless efforts and the successes achieved in ending nearly 15 years of neglect toward the nation’s urgent call to strengthen its defense. On November 17th, 2023—exactly 37 years after that historic call—he drew a firm red line to uphold the Maldives’ independence and sovereignty through a far-sighted defense policy aimed at transforming our military into a modern force capable of protecting the nation,” he said.

Minister Ghassan underscored that the current administration has achieved many goals over the past two years.

In this regard, he detailed that the administration has commenced disbursing a reasonable allowance for the families of martyrs, commenced efforts to train new soldiers and acquired new vessels to strengthen Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF)’s marine corps and Coastguard.

Addressing new recruits joining national security services, Minister Ghassan said today is among the best days to consider what responsibilities they are training to assume, adding they will become the generation that delivers the Maldives to full independence if they remain committed.

Minister Ghassan also addressed soldiers, emphasizing that today marks the day when Maldives’ military should fall in line and showcase its pride and honor.

He affirmed that Maldivian soldiers remain committed to defending the nation until their last breath for as long as the Maldives exists.
