Fireworks at Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo to celebrate referendum success

Addu City’s Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo districts will be holding a firework display on Sunday night to mark success in the referendum held on Saturday regarding the composition of Addu City Council where both districts voted in favor establishing councils, formally seeking administrative independence from Addu City Council.

The firework display will be held at Hulhumeedhoo harbor area at 8:30pm. It is an initiative of Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, a ruling party lawmaker, and Meedhoo MP Abdul Rahman, who was elected independently.

The preliminary results of the referendum:

According to current results:

• Hulhudhoo: 723 out of 1,070 voters voted in favor of forming a separate council
• Meedhoo: 847 out of 1,002 voters voted in favor of forming a separate council
• Feydhoo: 1,784 out of 2,421 voters voted against secession

Only 4,493 voters cast ballots, just 47 percent of the total electorate.
