Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued a yellow alert to northern atolls, warning of rough seas in the region.

The yellow alert, in effect from 14:00pm to 18:00pm on Wednesday, has been issued from Haa Alifu Atoll to Baa Atoll.

According to Met Office, during the period the region will experience strong winds of 25 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour with gusts of 45 miles per hour and rough seas.

Met Office has also issued a white alert to central atolls, warning of strong winds and rough seas.

The white alert, in effect from 14:30pm to 20:30pm on Wednesday, has been issued from Kaafu Atoll to Laamu Atoll.

During this period, Met Office said the region will see strong winds of 19 miles per hour to 24 miles per hour with gusts of 45 miles per hour and rough seas.

Met Office states Maldives will experience continued rainfall across parts of the country, with weather conditions expected to gradually improve after Friday.

Maldives has been grappling with severe weather conditions since last week.

Authorities have issued repeated advisories urging seafarers to remain cautious, especially in light of two recent marine accidents linked to rough weather:

  • On Wednesday, October 15, a ferry capsized near K. Thulhaagiri, killing one Maldivian and two foreign nationals. The vessel, Almaak Fiya, was en route from Male' to K. Eriyadhoo when it overturned. Four crew members were rescued, one was found dead, and one remains missing.
  • On Thursday, October 16, the cargo vessel Nasr sank 3.3 nautical miles south of Alhigaa while traveling from Male' to Naifaru. All five crew members were rescued by the MNDF and taken to Naifaru Hospital.
