On Saturday, on the occasion of World Tourism Day, Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim delivered a heartfelt address celebrating the nation’s thriving tourism sector and urging stakeholders to embrace sustainability and inclusivity as the industry continues to grow.
Speaking to the nation via an X video that showcased Maldives’ rich cultural heritage through visuals of traditional dances, local crafts, and community-driven initiatives, the Minister praised the dedication of tourism professionals whose “tireless efforts” have helped position the Maldives as a world-class destination. “Your hard work, commitment and passion have been instrumental in driving our nation’s prosperity,” he said.
Reflecting on the past year, the Minister highlighted tourism’s continued contribution to economic growth, employment, education, and community development across the islands. He noted that both tourist arrivals and tourism receipts have steadily increased since the pandemic, mirroring global trends. In 2024, international tourism receipts reached an estimated USD 1.6 trillion, with arrivals projected to grow by 3–5% in 2025.
This year’s World Tourism Day theme focuses on tourism as a force for positive change, which resonates deeply with Maldives, the Minister said. He emphasized the need to balance industry growth with environmental conservation and cultural preservation, ensuring that tourism benefits reach every corner of society.

“I urge all stakeholders; governments, agencies, businesses, residents and visitors alike, to work together responsibly,” he said, calling for a collective commitment to sustainability, resilience, and equity in tourism practices.
The minister duly noted that under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives has made “significant strides” toward sustainable tourism development. The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure, innovation, and marketing to strengthen the country’s position as a sustainable and inclusive destination.
He concluded with a message of unity and gratitude: “Together we can ensure that tourism continues to be a source of pride, opportunity and positive transformation for our nation.”
As Maldives celebrates World Tourism Day, the Minister encouraged all citizens to embrace responsible travel practices and continue working toward a future where tourism brings prosperity, peace, and joy to the islands.
The interim government aims to attract 2.5 million tourists this year. According to figures released by the ministry on Wednesday last, 1.6 million tourists visited Maldives so far.
