The police have wrapped up the investigation into the fatal stabbing that took place in L. Maavah back in July, and asked the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) to file charges against the suspect.
Moosa Ibrahim, 29, Nalahiya, L. Maavah, died from a knife wound to his neck during a physical altercation outside the volleyball court in Maavah at around 10:00 am on Monday. Mohamed Ibrahim, 29, Asaree Manzil, HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, surrendered himself to the police shortly afterwards.
In a statement on Thursday, the police said they have wrapped up the investigation into the case, and forwarded it to the PGO for charges on Tuesday.
The PGO has accepted the case, added the police.
Mohamed had confessed to the killing during his remand hearing on July 29.
According to multiple sources from Maavah, Moosa was killed in a dispute that arose between the two after Mohamed, an alleged drug addict and petty thief, failed to pay Moosa, an alleged drug dealer, money he owed for drugs.
Sources report that Moosa and his group had repeatedly beaten Mohamed over the issue, including a day before the murder, when they beat him up and threw him into the lagoon.
At around 10:00 am on July 28, Moosa and a friend saw Mohamed near the island’s volleyball court and attacked him.
It was during this altercation that Mohamed took out a knife and slashed Moosa’s throat, severing an artery.
Mohamed reportedly fled to the beach, where he threw away his knife into the water and then went to the police station to surrender himself to the authorities.
The police retrieved the murder weapon after Mohamed showed him where he threw it.
The police confirm Mohamed has a criminal record. While he did not reside in Maavah, he was in a relationship with a woman from the island and frequently visited the island.
He is currently jailed pending the outcome of his trial.
