Dhiraagu has partnered with the Maldives National University (MNU) to support E-Waste Hackathon 2025, a youth-driven initiative designed to tackle the growing challenge of electronic waste in the Maldives.
Taking place from September 28 to October 7 at the MNU, the hackathon will bring together students, young innovators, and environmental enthusiasts to develop practical, scalable, and creative solutions for managing and reducing e-waste.
The initiative aims to not only address the pressing e-waste issue but also foster innovation and environmental stewardship among Maldivian youth.
The hackathon is targeted towards high school, college and university students.
E-waste refers to discarded electrical or electronic devices. This includes discarded computers, phones, TVs, refrigerators, batteries, and other electronic products. E-waste is one of the major and emerging environmental challenges.
The purpose of the E-Waste Hackathon is to highlight this issue and inspire young people to develop innovative solutions to address it.
Held under the theme “Innovating for a Circular Economy: Tackling the E-Waste Crisis”, participants will explore solutions in areas such as e-waste collection and upcycling, recycling optimization, and sustainable disposal methods.
The week-long program will include workshops led by experts in sustainability, waste management, and innovation, as well as mentorship sessions at MNU to support teams through ideation and solution development.
Participants will also take part in site visits to local waste management facilities and recycling centers, before presenting their final solutions to a panel of judges.
Registration closes on Thursday.
Dhiraagu says it remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that empower youth and foster digital innovation and sustainability.
