Traditionally, the President has represented the Maldives at UNGA, with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu delivering the national address during last year’s general debate.
However, the President’s Office did not disclose the reason behind President Muizzu’s absence from the event, despite the agenda including crucial topics such as the peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and the implementation of the two-state solution.
Chief Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Heena Waleed, stated she would clarify the reason, but has not responded to follow-up messages. Similarly, attempts to reach the Foreign Ministry’s media official regarding the matter were unsuccessful.
Notably, President Muizzu departed on an eight-day visit to 31 islands in four atolls last Friday.
The High-Level Week of the 80th Session of UNGA includes a range of key events, such as the general debate, several high-level meetings—including one marking the UN’s 80th anniversary and another focused on advancing a peaceful resolution to the Palestine issue through a two-state solution—as well as the SDG Moment, the Climate Summit, and other significant sessions.
The 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) commenced on September 9, 2025, and is scheduled to conclude on September 8, 2026. The session is being presided over by Annalena Baerbock, former Foreign Minister of Germany.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, which was established on October 24, 1945. It also coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives joining the UN.
