Physical works have commenced on Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project, which will see the road modernized and expanded to four lanes.

The project was contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for MVR 144.5 million, with the deadline for completion set for one year and three months.

Physical works on the project were inaugurated by Construction Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib during a ceremony held on Thursday.

Ahead of commencing work on the project, a segment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu from the Republic’s Square to Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) was closed off last Tuesday.

Construction Ministry contracted the project to MTCC on April 9th. The project will see the construction of 830 meters of road with an asphalt base and 737 meters of sheet piling.

MTCC will also install a new stormwater drainage system which will help curb flooding during heavy rainfall, including a drainage service line.

Apart from this, MTCC will also develop a walking lane for pedestrians and install streetlights and signs.

Some Male’ roads have been constructed with asphalt as part of a project to redevelop Male’ roads up to modern standards. The remaining roads have a paving stone base.

While some parts of Malé city have benefited from road development projects resulting in asphalted surfaces, others remain paved. The decision to upgrade the city's primary thoroughfare, Ameenee Magu, was made last year to improve driving conditions for residents. However, concerns have been raised regarding potholes which have formed on this stretch of road, which pose a safety risk to both motorists and pedestrians.
