President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Tuesday, has announced a two-year project to develop handball courts at islands that request the facility.

Speaking at AA. Himandhoo on Tuesday as part of his ongoing tour of Alifu Alifu Atoll, President Muizzu underscored the development of handball courts as something strongly desired by women.

As such, he said the development of handball courts at islands which request them will be included in next year’s budget under a special initiative to develop handball courts across the country.

According to the President, the development will be carried out within a two-year period.

“By the will of Almighty, the project will be a huge success. We have notice this [handball courts] as something desired by the residents of many islands, especially women. It is a sport that can be developed. Handball is a sport where successes are already being achieved,” he said.

The President underscored that his administration places a special priority on developing handball in both Male’ area and atolls.

“In this trajectory, the development of handball courts will mark an important sports program commencing with next year’s budget, undertaken over the course of next year and the year after that,” he said.

Speaking further, President Muizzu said the implementation of pledges across the islands is proceeding at a fast pace.

Shedding light on the development projects in the pipeline specifically for Himandhoo, the President assured a state-of-the-art laboratory will be developed at the island’s health centre, which will be operationalized by next year.

He added that efforts are underway to complete the island’s mosque by December.

The President also highlighted plans to tackle beach erosion on the island through the placement of rock boulders. He announced that physical work on the harbor expansion project will begin within two weeks. While lighting installation at Himandhoo’s football stadium and the construction of an outdoor gym are already in progress, he further stated that work on a fitness and recreation centre is set to commence soon.
